Lineage-specific RNA structures in Chikungunya virus

Changing a single nucleotide of an RNA may completely disrupt its structure

Here we studied this effect in Chikungunya virus, which causes millions of human infections every year. Using molecular epidemiology data, we found single nucleotide variants that change the stability and fold of locally stable RNA structures throughout the viral genome.
